A Quarter Of is a unique website that markets itself as a traditionally British “old-fashioned sweetshop”, stocking as it does a wide range of sweets, many of which that hark back to the golden age of the sweetshop.

It is humorous to note that A Quarter Of began life as a jovial conversation in a pub. According the website’s About Us page, the founders were enjoying a drink when they began to recount the types of sweets that the two of them used to buy from their local sweetshop on their walk home from school. 

The two founders mused that if they tried to launch a business selling the sweets of their childhood, then the likelihood is that they wouldn’t be able to obtain them at all. After all, if those classic sweets are not available for sale in high street stores, then surely nobody was still making them?

However, it turned out that people were still making them!

And thus, the idea soon bore fruit, and the owners began thinking about how they could market these sweets to a greater audience. The owners therefore decided that a website would be the ideal platform on which to sell these hard-to-obtain sweets – all they needed was an image.

When the owners were children, one of their favourite comics was Whizzer and Chips, and the A Quarter Of logo is directly inspired by the design of this now-defunct comic. In fact, the logo was actually drawn and designed by a talented cartoonist – Colin Whittock – whom the two owners befriended and had design a unique look for the business. 

According to the owners, one of the best things about working for A Quarter Of – aside from all the sweet tasting – is looking at the latest drawings supplied to them by their cartoonist. 

One final element that helped to inspire A Quarter Of was one of the owner’s favourite childhood books: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Delivery terms and conditions

A Quarter Of can distribute their goods to the UK and beyond however, the United States and Canada are an exception due to the lack of product liability insurance cover. Your order will be fulfilled via Royal Mail 1st or 2nd class delivery or via courier for faster services. 

Delivery outside of the UK may incur local import taxes depending on the destination which will be charged at your own responsibility. Couriers will require a signature when delivering goods, only available during weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Royal Mail 2nd class delivery will usually take 2-3 days to arrive.
