History

The history of Boots is remarkable, a quintessentially British company that was started by John Boot back in 1849.

Due to ill health, John was forced to quit his agricultural job and think of a new way to earn a living. John learned the basics of medical botany from his mother.

He wanted to be able to offer affordable healthcare remedies to everyone and so this was the idea behind his first store in Nottingham.

John’s son Jesse started to work in the store at just 13 and by the age of 21 was a partner in this thriving little business, and the store was renamed M and J Boot.

During the late 19th Century more and more medicines were available but they were often very expensive and unaffordable for many.

Jesse felt this was wrong and that medicines should be widely available and affordable for all. It was this thinking that inspired him to change the way the chemists worked and would buy in bulk ensuring that he was paying the lowest possible price, he would then sell these to his customers at affordable prices.

In 1881 Jesse was able to open a second store and even made the most of a change in the law to appoint his very first Pharmacist, Edwin Waring.

This was a great move as it gave boots a unique selling point and they could still dispense medicines at half the price.

BY 1900 Jesse had married, and together with his wife Florence, they had nearly 200 stores and a factory for manufacture.

By the 1920s Boots were creating their own patented drugs and were one of the few companies to be approved by the British Medical Research Council to manufacture Insulin.

Jesse’s son John became chairman of the company in 1929 and continued to run the business using the same ethos as his parents and grandfather before him.

Jesse Boot relinquished control of the business in 1920 when he sold it to the United Drug Company, a large American pharmaceutical company.  Jesse’s son John became Chairman of Boots and continued to run the business along similar lines to his parents.

Number Seven launched in 1935 as a luxurious, but affordable, skin care range. Number Seven consultants were introduced into the stores to offer expert advice on the shop floor. Today No7 is the UK’s leading skincare brand.
