In 1952 brothers Ronald and Peter Goldstein noticed there was a huge gap in the market for business that specialised in the retail of toiletries. Superdrug was incorporated in 1964 as 'Leading Supermarkets Limited' and later that year changed its name to Superdrug.
The first Superdrug store opened on 26th April 1966 in Putney High Street and within 2 years had 3 stored.
Then in 1972 Superdrug bought Elgee Drugstores, a company operating a chain of five stores and by 1976 they had over 65 stores all across the UK.
1984 saw record sales of over 1 million in one week. The chain opened its 200th store in Bishop Auckland.
In 1990 after many the brothers left the business appointing a new managing director. It was under his management that Superdrug reached 650 stores.
The company went through some major changes in direction during 1992 with the opening of an instore pharmacy and the launch of its very popular No Animal Testing Charter.
Fast forward to the year 2000 and the company celebrated the opening of its 200th Pharmacy. They also launched a free health and beauty magazine, Spirit. It was also the year that they launched www.superdrug.co.uk.
The chain have continued to go from strength to strength and this has been because they are always looking for new and innovative ways to engage with customers.
