O2 is the trading name of Telefonica UK Limited. They are a highly established telecommunications, internet and financial services provider in the UK. O2 was first formed way back in 1985 by John Carrington, under the name Cellnet. This was joint venture between BT Group and Securicor. However, in 1990 BT paid Securicor for their share in Cellnet, resulting in rebranding the company at BT Cellnet. Fast forward to 2002 and the first appearance of the O2 branding was a result of a spin-off company, O2 plc.
In 2005, the Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica successfully acquired O2 plc for £1 billion. As part of the terms of the deal, Telefonica agreed to continue using the “O2” brand and the company’s UK headquarters in Slough.
Apart from being a highly successful mobile phone company, O2 have diversified into finance, broadband and sponsorship markets. Highlights include becoming the official sponsor of the O2 Arena, formerly known as the Millennium Dome and the rebranded O2 Academy live music venues.
